Cave Story Not!
2D Pixel Art Platformer
A mod that reimagines the game's underground world. New pathways and hidden areas add variety to familiar environments. While the design itself is rudimentary, it shows my initial attempts at crafting interesting spaces and pathways. This mod also demonstrates basic level design principles within the game's framework.

Pacing

I wanted to provide a peak experience early on to hook players and then slowly ramp up the intensity over time. Safe rooms were strategically placed to offer players a breather and allow them to appreciate the environment.
Segments

Start Point
The safe room serves as a comprehensive tutorial, where players can master essential skills like saving, healing, jumping, opening doors, and avoiding drowning, all within a controlled and risk-free environment.

First Cave
Now that the player knows the fundamentals, it's up to them to decide what to do next. It may be challenging for them because they have no way to fight enemies yet, but if they persevere, they will eventually be rewarded.

Acquiring the Polar Star
After getting the gun, they now have a chance to fight back. This new ability keeps the player engaged and make them feel rewarded.

Backtracking
With newfound abilities, players can revisit previously inaccessible areas, uncovering items that were initially out of reach. This encourages exploration and provides a sense of accomplishment as players progress through the game.

Cave Exit
This marks the end of the player's journey, allowing them to finally leave the cave. As a final challenge, players face an unexpected twist that tests their skills and understanding of the game's mechanics, which forces them to adapt to a new situation.

The "Safe Room" Policy
Addresses the disorientation players often experience when starting a new game. By providing a controlled environment free from immediate threats, players can familiarize themselves with the game's mechanics, controls, and physics at their own pace.
